   Résumé
   À Londres, en allant rendre visite à son ex-femme Brenda, Richard, ancien pilote de la R.A.F. au chômage, rencontre son ami Bob. Brenda est découverte assassinée… Puis c'est au tour de Babs, la maîtresse de Richard ; celui-ci est condamné. Bob, paisible marchand de légumes de Covent Garden, serait-il le meurtrier de ces femmes retrouvées nues et étranglées, portant autour du cou la cravate d'un club, et que poursuit l'inspecteur Oxford?…
   Commentaire
   Apparemment, Hitchcock revient aux vieilles recettes éprouvées du suspense, avec faux et vrai coupable. S'y ajoutent un humour macabre des plus grinçants et une virtuosité dont certains ne le croyaient plus capable. Mais le contexte des années 1970 lui permet de développer crûment la composante sexuelle de son univers et d'impliquer plus que jamais le spectateur, qui croit ruser avec le maître, dans le déchaînement des forces maléfiques.
